Information on sexual assault and family violence to all new migrants
Proposal Summary
How sexual assault and family violence are defined can differ cross culturally. Providing accessible in language information/education on this including legal and support options is needed.
Family violence and sexual assault differ in definition and support options cross culturally. It is essential that all new migrants receive accurate, accessible in language information so they are aware of their rights, therapeutic support and legal options if needed. This education piece may have preventative impacts and well as facilitate timely helpseeking and early interventions. An example of a cross-cultrual difference are 'conjugal rights' which is a legal term obligates married parties (namely the wife) to have sex with their partner as part of their spousal duties. This is problematic in a contemporary Australian context as congual rights do not exist and can conflict with affirmative consent leglislation. For example, sexual consent must be sort and can be withdrawn at any point in time, including between married parties.
